COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Postgame notes following Maryland's 20-9 loss to Virginia.
Reliable Tackler: Alex Wujciak led the Terps with 14 tackles on the day (5-9-14), and has now recorded double-digit tackles in five of seven games this year. Wujciak entered the day leading the ACC in tackles per game (10.5) and first in the NCAA (10.3) on the active career tackles-per-game list.
Defense Holds Ground: Maryland allowed just 63 rushing yards by Virginia, including two yards in the first half. That marks the lowest total rushing yards accumulated by a Maryland opponent since California had 38 last season. In their previous two games, the Cavaliers had recorded 106 and 231 rushing yards against North Carolina and Indiana, respectively. Overall, UVa finished with just 201 yards in total offense and nine first downs. It was the lowest total offense by an opponent since the Terps allowed just 163 at Florida International (9/8/2007).
Avoiding Smith: Virginia chose not to kick to All-ACC kick returner Torrey Smith. Smith, who entered the game leading the nation with 236.7 all-purpose yards per game, also owns the Maryland career kickoff return record with 1,926 yards. The Cavaliers kicked short, with Cory Jackson, Gary Douglas and Dan Bonato all making returns.
High-Pressure: Maryland's defense entered the game tied for second in the ACC with 15 sacks on the season. The Terps racked up five against the Cavaliers, which marked a season-high. The previous high was four, achieved against Middle Tennessee State on Sept. 19. It also marked the most sacks recorded by the Maryland defense since it had five against California last season.
Ferrara Sets Career-High: Nick Ferrara hit a career-high three field goals in the game, including a 48-yarder, the second-longest of his career (50 yards vs. Wake Forest 10/10). On the season, Ferrara has hit 11 of 15 field goals, and all 17 of his PAT's. He ranked third in scoring (6.8 ppg) among kickers in the ACC entering today's contest.
Ground Game: After struggling to get the running game going in recent weeks, Maryland had a good day on the ground against Virginia. The Terps totaled 126 yards in the game, led by Davin Meggett who had 52 yards on 11 carries. Gary Douglas also chipped in with 49 yards on six carries.
Spreading the Wealth: Seven different Terps recorded a reception against the Cavaliers. Torrey Smith, Adrian Cannon and LaQuan Williams each had three catches. QB Chris Turner has done a good job spreading the ball around all season, as five different Terps have at least 10 receptions on the season, and 11 Terps have at least five receptions.
