Terps Celebrate Successful 2008-09 Campaign

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland water polo team celebrated one its most successful seasons over the weekend.

Head coach Carl Salyer and the Terps handed out awards for the 2008-09 season at their annual banquet Sunday and held an alumni game.

Maryland finished last season with a 16-13 record and a third-place showing in the CWPA Eastern Championship, the Terps' best finish in their six-year history.

Alumni, family and friends were invited to play in the Red/Black scrimmage. The Black team came out on top 13-11. The first half had a normal game format and the second half was played using inner tubes.

Alumni who attended included Ashleigh Jobson, Christen Vagts, Elizabeth Hopkins, Becca Thompson, Meghan Mulhern, Lisa Vitali, Anna Gossett, Cathy Popadiuk, Allie Houseal, Laura Locher and Meghan Sullivan.

The awards bestowed at the banquet:

  • Most Improved - Leanne Spedding
  • Best Defender - Christen Vagts
  • Sportsmanship - Blaise Stanicic
  • Leadership - Blaise Stanicic and Laurel Laidlaw
  • MVP - Blaise Stanicic and Rachel Jordan
  • Rookie of the Year - Elina Goldenberg
