COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland men's lacrosse coach Dave Cottle has released the Terps' 2010 schedule. The schedule features eight nationally televised games and finds Maryland once again taking part in two major events at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium.
The Terps are coming off last year's 10-6 campaign that saw them reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament for the 29th time. Maryland will return eight starters, including all of its attack, two junior defenders, goalie Brian Phipps. The Terps also return their top three short-stick defenders, including top face-off man Bryn Holmes, and redshirt-junior long pole Brian Farrell will be back after missing nearly all of 2009 due to injury.
"This is an exciting schedule for our players, coaches, fans and fans of lacrosse in general," said Cottle. "But, it is also a challenging schedule that we hope will help this team improve as the season progresses. I'm looking forward to getting it started."
Following two weekends of preseason scrimmages with Loyola, Drexel, 2009 NCAA runner-up Cornell, and 2009 NCAA champion Syracuse, the 2010 schedule kicks off in Louisville, Ky., with the Terps first-ever trip to Bellarmine on Feb. 20.
The following weekend finds Maryland returning to the D.C.-area for its annual showdown with Georgetown on Feb. 27, which will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU and WMAR in Baltimore.
The Terps will then take part in the fourth annual Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore on Mar. 6. The Maryland-Duke game will be the first game in the Face-Off Classic doubleheader, which finds both games televised nationally on ESPNU. Johns Hopkins and Princeton will meet in the second game.
The team plays its first home game of the season against local rival Towson on March 13 in a game that features a special 11 a.m. start time. Maryland then heads north up I-95 to play UMBC on March 20. Both of those games will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU and WMAR in Baltimore.
The Terps conclude their ACC schedule with back-to-back nationally televised ESPNU games with North Carolina and Virginia. Maryland travels to Chapel Hill, N.C., to battle the Tar Heels on March 27, before returning to College Park to host the Cavaliers on April 3.
Maryland will host Navy on April 10 in another ESPNU/WMAR telecast before returning to M&T Bank Stadium on April 17 to face arch-rival Johns Hopkins in the second annual Smartlink Day of Rivals event. The Blue Jays-Terrapins game will cap the doubleheader, which also features the annual Army-Navy game in the opener. Both games will be shown live on ESPNU.
Maryland then hosts the 2010 ACC Tournament at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium on April 23 and 25.
The Terps will then welcome back former assistant coach Andy Copelan and his Fairfield Stags to College Park on May 1 before playing its lone weekday game of the season on May 4 against Penn.
Senior Day will provide the final tune-up before the NCAA Tournament and this year it comes on May 8 vs. Colgate.
The NCAA Tournament will begin on the weekend on May 15-16 and conclude with the National Championship game on Memorial Day, May 31, in M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
