Postgame notes following Maryland's 24-21 win over Clemson.
Smith First to 1,000: On his first kickoff return of the day, Torrey Smith broke the 1,000 yard mark in all-purpose yards this season, the first player in the NCAA (FBS) to do so. On the season, Smith has a total of 1,153. He currently ranks 15th all-time in Maryland career all-purpose yards with 2,578.
Capable Kicker: With Travis Baltz sidelined with an ankle injury, it was up to true freshman Nick Ferrara to handle all phases of the kicking game - punting, kickoffs and place-kicking. Ferrara's 61-yard punt in the first quarter was the longest punt since Baltz booted a 65-yarder against Georgia Tech in 2007. He averaged 43.2 yards on eight punts for the day, and placed three punts inside the opponents' 20-yard-line. Ferrara also made a 43-yard field goal.
Logan Lights It Up: Tony Logan took a punt 43 yards to the Clemson 1-yard-line, setting up a 1-yard TD run by Davin Meggett that extended Maryland's lead to 24-13 in the third quarter. It was the longest punt return since Danny Oquendo had a 45-yard return vs. Florida State on 10/28/06. Logan had four punt returns on the day for 52 yards.
Career-Highs: Safety Terrell Skinner had a career day, making eight stops, including seven solo stops, which set a career-high. His previous career-high in solo stops was six against Middle Tennessee last season... Chris Turner had a career-high in rushing attempts with 17, totaling six net yards on the day...Nick Ferrara's 43-yard field goal in the second quarter was the longest of his career.
More Defense: Maryland held Clemson to just 274 yards in total offense, marking the second-fewest allowed by the Terrapins this season. The Tigers managed just 71 yards in offense in the second half, earned five first downs and held the ball for just 11:37 after halftime.
Demetrius Dynamite: Freshman WLB Demetrius Hartsfield had a career game, capped by a game-changing play. Hartsfield had a team-high 10 tackles (previous high was 3-6-9 game last week vs. Rutgers). His 11-yard sack of Clemson QB Kyle Parker forced a fumble, which he recovered himself with time winding down and gave the ball back to the Terps with 27 seconds left. It was the second sack of his career (one vs. Middle Tennessee State). He also had 2.5 tackles for loss. He came into the game third on the team in tackles.
