GREENSBORO, N.C. - Maryland junior Jason Herrick and sophomore Zac MacMath landed on the 2009 ACC Men's Soccer First Team, as announced by the league office Tuesday morning.
Herrick led No. 6 Maryland, which battles Virginia in the ACC quarterfinals on Wednesday, in goals and points with eight and 17, respectively. The junior from Elmhurst, Ill., netted six game-winners this season including a pair against Boston College and Clemson in ACC play. Herrick ranked third in the ACC in goals per game (0.47) and first in game-winning goals.
MacMath was tabbed the top keeper in the conference this season after helping lead a completely refurbished backline to eight shutouts in 18 matches. The sophomore keeper from St. Petersburg, Fla., boasted a 0.79 GAA while mustering a 10-4-2 record for the Terps. MacMath was named to the ACC All-Freshmen team in 2008.
Seniors Kevin Tangney and Drew Yates both earned second-team honors in their final seasons in the Red and Black in 2009. Tangney led a youth-laden backline which featured a pair of freshmen and one sophomore for the majority of the season. The fifth-year senior from Newtown, Pa., also helped Maryland offensively, connecting for three goals including the game-winner against then-No. 2 North Carolina. Yates is one of only three players to start every match for Maryland this season. The midfielder from Severna Park, Md., was second on the squad in scoring with four goals and nine points. A four-year mainstay on the field for the Terps, Yates has played in every Maryland match since his arrival to College Park in 2006.
Taylor Kemp and Ethan White were both named to the All-Freshmen team. Kemp and White aided a backline that was depleted by graduation and departures to the professional ranks in 2009. White has started in every match for the Terps while Kemp has started at left-back in 16 matches as a rookie.
Wake Forest won three out of four specialty awards as Corben Bone was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year, Ike Opara was named Defensive Player of the Year and Jay Vidovich claimed Coach of the Year honors. Andrew Wenger of Duke took home the Freshman of the Year award.
Fourth-seeded Maryland takes on No. 5 seed Virginia at noon on Wednesday in the ACC tournament quarterfinals at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
