COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Remy McBain recorded a double-double, setting career highs in assists and digs to spearhead a 3-1 victory for the University of Maryland volleyball team Friday evening at Comcast Pavilion, 25-19, 8-25, 25-17 and 25-14.

McBain made plays all over the court, recording 12 digs on defense and expertly distributing the ball to her attackers with 33 assists. For good measure, McBain added four kills on .364 hitting.

The Terrapins (12-17, 4-12 ACC) were efficient on offense in the opening set, as McBain delivered 10 of her assists and the team hit .345. Senior Katie Usher was dominant in the frame, recording five of her eight kills on .833 hitting.

Despite Maryland's offensive prowess, North Carolina (14-13, 10-6 ACC) managed to stay close most of the set. The Terps led by one, 17-16, before pulling away. A Maddi Lee kill and three straight Tar Heel attack errors gave Maryland a 21-16 lead and control of the stanza.

After the Tar Heels took the second set to tie the match at 1-1, the Terps regrouped during the 10-minute break and came out strong in the third frame.

Maryland scored five of the first seven points in the third set to force an early North Carolina timeout. Up 8-5, the Terps made a big move to create space on the scoreboard. Lisa Scott notched a kill and Brittney Grove recorded three consecutive service aces to put Maryland up 12-5.

The Tar Heels fought back to within three at 19-16, but the Terps had another answer, scoring five straight points to earn set point before winning the frame, 25-17.

Similarly to the third set, the Terps and Tar Heels were close midway through the session before Maryland pulled away for an easy win.

Holding a 10-8 lead, the Terps scored five of the next six points to take a six-point advantage and then completely pulled away with a 5-2 run to go up 20-11. Holding match point at 24-14, freshman Kara Bates clinched the victory with a kill off a pass from McBain.

Several Terps had big matches against the Tar Heels. Bates tied Lee with the team lead in kills with 12. Scott recorded eight kills and five blocks, Grove finished with four service aces, 14 digs and three blocks and Sam Rosario recorded 22 digs. Senior Christina Paul had a career night, as well, posting a career-high 12 digs.

Emily McGee led the Tar Heels with 16 kills.

Maryland is back at Comcast Pavilion at 1 p.m. Sunday, as NC State visits College Park for Senior Day. Usher, Paul and Hayley Hanson will be honored before the match.
