COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The University of Maryland football team held a 90-minute practice on Thursday afternoon in preparation for Saturday's matchup with Florida State, which is set for noon at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, Fla.
The game will be shown regionally on Raycom Sports. Locally the game can be seen on WTTG-TV (FOX 5) in Washington, D.C., and on WJZ-TV (CBS 13) in Baltimore.
With Chris Turner ruled out of Saturday's game due to a knee injury, sophomore Jamarr Robinson will make his second start at quarterback. Against Virginia Tech last week, Robinson ran for 129 yards, the third-highest single-game total by a quarterback in school history. Head coach Ralph Friedgen said he has been pleased with the young signal-callers progression during practice this week.
"I thought he improved, thought he had a better week of practice," Friedgen said Thursday. "I saw him reading things better. I think he was kind of just throwing at people last week, but (offensive coordinator) James (Franklin) has been working on him and even today I noticed a few things he did better. I'm hoping from last week's experience he'll grow and hopefully we can get our running game going. Hopefully with Da'Rel (Scott) back that'll happen."
Robinson became the first Maryland quarterback to run for 100 yards since Shaun Hill had 105 against Duke on Oct. 20, 2001. In his first career start, Robinson had eight rushes of at least 11 yards and accounted for 233 total yards.
Torrey Smith added to his long list of records last week, breaking the Maryland single-season all-purpose yards mark set by Lamont Jordan. Smith passed Jordan, who had 1,840 yards in 1999, with his second catch of the day. He has 1,921 all-purpose yards on the season, and is in a race with C.J. Spiller of Clemson to set the Atlantic Coast Conference single-season all-purpose yards record. With two games left, Spiller has 1,952 yards.
Robinson and Smith hope to help counter some dangerous offensive threats posed by Florida State.
Although quarterback Christian Ponder was lost to a season-ending shoulder injury two weeks ago, redshirt freshman E.J. Manuel proved to be a capable replacement in the Seminoles' 41-28 win over Wake Forest last week. Ponder was averaging 301.9 passing yards per game while completing 68.8 percent of his passes prior to the injury. Manuel, meanwhile, rushed for 45 yards on 10 carries in his first career start. He went 15-for-20 through the air for 220 yards and a touchdown on his way to being named ACC rookie of the week.
Maryland, playing in its final road game of the season, is looking to get its first win at Florida State, with the Seminoles having taken all nine contests at Doak Campbell Stadium.
Following Thursday's practice, Friedgen announced that fullback Cory Jackson will serve as special-teams captain against Florida State.
Friedgen also named LB Bradley Johnson defensive scout team player of the week, and QB Clay Belton offensive scout team player of the week for the second consecutive week.
Fullback Taylor Watson, an Accokeek, Md., native, will carry the Maryland state flag onto the field, and safety Terrell Skinner, a St. Petersburg, Fla., native, will bring the American flag.
The Terrapin Sports Radio Network will also broadcast Saturday's game. In addition to the regional broadcast on Raycom Sports, the game is available through ESPN Gameplan and will be streamed on ESPN360. Comcast SportsNet will show a replay of the Raycom broadcast in the Washington D.C./Baltimore market at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets for Senior Day: Tickets for the Terps' final home game are available through the Maryland Athletics Ticket Office. Fans may call 1-800-IM-A-TERP or click here to purchase tickets for the Boston College contest (Nov. 21), which will serve as the final home game for 14 seniors.
Worn Jerseys from Saturday's Game on Auction Block: The special black and desert camouflage jerseys worn by the Terps in Saturday's game are being auctioned off to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project, a not-for-profit organization that provides programs and services for injured service members and their families. Each of the uniforms had a unique twist; a core value embellishment - Duty, Honor, Courage, Commitment, Integrity, Country, and Service - which replaced the players' last name on the back of each jersey. Wounded Warrior and Under Armour, which spear-headed the project, also created special make-up products which are being sold in college book stores, local military base exchanges, and on-line at www.underarmour.com. Click here to access the auction which continues until Sunday, Nov. 22.
University Archives Trying to Preserve Historical Films: The University of Maryland is in danger of losing one of the most important parts of its athletic heritage - its historical football footage. More than 400 reels of game films, dating from 1946 to 1989, are facing a relentless enemy, chemical breakdown. Archivists at the university estimate that 68% of the football film collection is in an advanced state of chemical deterioration, and it is a race against time to ensure that none of these important moving images are lost. There is a preservation effort underway which is being funded by contributions from the University's M Club and Terrapin Club and the Maryland Gridiron Network, as well as numerous individual contributions from former players, alumni, and fans of the Terps. To date, nearly $61,000 of the $200,000 needed to complete the project is in place. Click here for more information.
