Maryland Quotes
Head Coach Brenda Frese
Opening statement:
"That was a thrill of a game and hang out because it's going to be quite a ride. I'm just really, really proud of the poise and composure we kept in the second half, obviously with the momentum changing and building that lead coming out of halftime, and then their press giving us some difficulties. I just thought we did a great job with such a young team, just keeping our poise and our composure and quite honestly being able to get stops on the defensive end. I thought it was our defense, our ability to limit them to one shot. Excited just to be able to see this team grow and learn and get better."
On who provides the leadership with such a young team:
"I think everybody. I mean everybody has a leadership position. I think obviously a lot of times it's based on the feel of the game, who's feeling it, who's confident. But as you can see, freshmen are going to step up. I thought Diandra (Tchatchouang) did a tremendous job imposing her will inside. Her and Lynetta (Kizer) both did a tremendous job. I didn't think they had an answer for us inside. They both stepped up and were huge for us. I think throughout the season it's going to be different players and that's a great thing from a team if different players can step up and provide that leadership."
On taking advantage of matchups:
"Just finding the right matchup and like I've said before with this team, it's going to be different matchups at different times and we were able to find a great matchup with Diandra and Lynetta inside. I thought that was a very successful matchup for us. I thought people were really ready to play. Tianna (Hawkins) of the bench and Anjalé (Barrett) gave us some great minutes down the stretch, so that's exciting in terms of putting the piece together."
Sophomore forward Lynetta Kizer
On what she has taken from last season into this season:
"Just taking pointers from Marisa [Coleman] and [Kristy Toliver] last year on how to be a leader. I feel I'm in no way shape or form there yet, but I'm striving to get there and just keeping my composure, because we are young. With nine sophomores and freshmen we are young, so just staying composed."
On keeping her composure after the Old Dominion run:
"I had my moments where I wanted to revert back to freshman Lynetta Kizer, but it's just I have to remember I am one of the returning starters and I do have younger players that are looking up to me so just being relaxed, just motivating them, letting them know everything's going to be fine, we just have to pick it back up on defense at that last little stretch."
Old Dominion Quotes
Head coach Wendy Larry
Opening statement:
"I thought it was a much more competitive half in the second half compared to the first. Especially with their height differential, I thought we showed a lot more fight in the dog in the second half."
On second-half adjustments made to get back into the game:
"I think we used our containing press that took them out of their offensive rhythm. We forced them to make quick decisions with the basketball and use more of the shot clock. Initially, it worked well and we were able to cut into the deficit, but the more we used it, the more comfortable they got with it. Then they started to get some lay-ups and easy shots at the cup."
On the learning experience gained from this game:
"We've learned a lot in these past two games. We're trying to improve every game. We're a very young team. We have a lot of newcomers at key positions and we're really young on the front line. We're not as healthy as we'd like to be, but our schedule isn't going to change."
