COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland men's soccer team boasted four players on the 2009 NCAA Division I All-South Atlantic Region list, highlighted by first team selections Zac MacMath, Jason Herrick and Kevin Tangney.
MacMath earned his first career regional honor after being tabbed the top keeper in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2009 as a first team pick. The sophomore from St. Petersburg, Fla., surrendered only 19 goals all season with a 0.88 goals against average and added 62 saves for a youth-laden Maryland squad that advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. He ended his second season with the Terps with seven shutouts and a 13-6-2 record.
Herrick spearheaded the offense in 2009, leading the team in goals (9) and points (19). The junior captain from Elmhurst, Ill., tallied an ACC-best seven game-winners. Herrick garners first team all-region honors after being named a first team All-ACC selection in November.
Tangney was the heart and soul of a very young Maryland backline that often featured two freshmen and a sophomore. A fifth-year senior from Newtown, Pa., Tangney guided the defense to nine shutouts in 2009 while giving up a mere 0.83 goals per game. The captain also helped Maryland offensively, scoring three goals and adding an assist in his final season in College Park. Tangney, who was also a second team All-ACC pick, netted the game-winner against then-No. 2 North Carolina in one of Maryland's finest victories in 2009.
In addition to the three first team picks, senior Drew Yates earned second team all-region honors. Yates ended his Maryland career in 2009 after playing every match since his arrival to College Park in 2006. The Severna Park, Md., native tied for second on the team with 13 points on five goals and three assists. He was also a second team All-ACC selection.
Maryland, which ended its season with a 15-6-2 record, secured its eighth-straight Sweet Sixteen berth and 16th consecutive winning season in 2009. The Terps return eight starters for the 2010 campaign.
