Maryland Returns to Action Against American

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - After a 10-day hiatus, the Maryland Terrapins return to action this weekend against American University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20 at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.

The Terps (8-2) are looking to improve their overall record to 9-2 with a win at American. Both of Maryland's losses have come while on the road. Prior to the team's 10-day break, the Terrapins were upset by cross-town rival Towson. Maryland not only looks to bounce back with a road-win against the Eagles but also get prepared for the Terrapin Classic which they are hosting at the end of the month.

The Eagles (5-4) have won their last two games, defeating High Point and Morgan State both my more than 10 points. The Eagles are led by Michelle Kirk who is averaging 20.3 points per game. She recently recorded her sixth 20-point effort this season against Morgan State on Wednesday evening. Kirk leads the Patriot League in scoring and is second in three-point percentage. She was also selected to the Preseason All-Patriot team.

Maryland leads the all-time series between the two teams with a 9-1 advantage. The schools have not played each other since 1993 when the Terrapins defeated American, 82-49.

Leading the Terrapin attack is freshman Diandra Tchatchouang with 13.9 points per game. She has recorded two 20-plus point games this season and tallied double-digit points in eight games. Tchatchouang is the leads all freshmen in the conference in scoring and ranks No. 1 in the ACC in three-point field goal percentage sinking 19-of-40 outside shots for a .475 clip. She has hit at least one three-pointer in every game this season.

Another freshman helps lead the squad. Tianna Hawkins is the team's leading rebounder grabbing 7.4 boards per game. Hawkins is also averaging 11.4 points. Sophomore Lynetta Kizer is also averaging double-figure points at 12.5 per contest.

Maryland has four games, including the one against American, before they head into conference play. Following the road game, the Terps finish out their non-conference slate at home with the Terrapin Classic starting Sunday, Dec. 27 against Stony Brook at 6 p.m. Tickets for games over the holidays, the 27th (Stony Brook), 29th (UNC-Wilmington) and Jan. 3rd (Saint Joseph's), are half price.
