COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 22 Maryland women's basketball team welcomes Minnesota Thursday as part of the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge event. The Terps (6-1) take on the Golden Gophers (5-2) at 7 p.m. ET in Comcast Center.
An autograph session with select Maryland players will be held following the game in Heritage Hall.
This marks the third year for the Challenge, with the ACC winning both years. The Terrapins are 2-0 in the event, after a 70-52 win at Purdue last year and a 77-53 win over Ohio State in 2008. Minnesota is 1-1 in the Challenge, winning last year over Boston College and losing at Virginia Tech in 2008.
Maryland owns the all-time series against Minnesota with their only meeting taking place 29 years ago. The Terps won 86-74 on Nov. 22, 1980. Within that time, Maryland head coach Brenda Frese coached at Minnesota, taking a previously 8-22 team to 22-8 the following year and to the program's second ever NCAA Tournament appearance. Frese earned AP National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year honors before coming to Maryland.
The Terrapins have won their last three games, defeating Samford, Howard and Drexel. Maryland is led by sophomore center Lynetta Kizer who has averaged 14.1 points per game. Freshman forward Tianna Hawkins leads the team in rebounds with 8.0.
Freshman Diandra Tchatchouang earned recognition from the ACC office being named Freshman of the Week for her performance in the Terrapins' last three games. She scored a total of 39 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. She was also an impressive 5-for-10 from outside the arc and 6-of-7 from the foul line.
Minnesota is coming off a loss to No.9/10 Xavier at the Junkanoo Jam Tournament on Grand Bahama Island. The Gophers had defeated Texas Christian 61-56 to advance to the title game against the Musketeers. Sophomore forward Jackie Voigt was named to the Junkanoo Jam all-tournament team. Voigt averages 1.1 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.
