Glover Earns ACC Legend Status

Dec. 9, 2009

TAMPA, Fla. - A former Terrapin All-American and All-Pro performer, Kevin Glover was one of the 12 individuals honored as the Class of 2009 Dr Pepper ACC Football Championship Game Legends.

The group, which included pair of Heisman Trophy winning quarterbacks in Florida State's Chris Weinke and Miami's Vinny Testaverde, and one of the winningest head football coaches in Atlantic Coast Conference history in Clemson's Danny Ford, was honored during last weekend's ACC title game.

The inductees were introduced at Friday's ACC Coaches and Awards Luncheon and honored later at the "ACC Night of Legends" held at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay. They were also recognized during pre-game ceremonies prior to the Clemson-Georgia Tech game at Raymond James Stadium.

The other inductees included Mike Mayock (Boston College), Bob Pascal (Duke), Eddie Lee Ivery (Georgia Tech), Kelvin Bryant (North Carolina), Willie Burden (NC State), Jim Bakhtiar (Virginia), Bob Schweickert (Virginia Tech) and Bill Barnes (Wake Forest).

"This certainly means a lot to me," Glover said at Friday's banquet. "I didn't know a lot about the history of the award. Then I saw the press release and to be included with all these great players is an honor. This is very special to me."

Glover, originally from Upper Marlboro, Md., starred as a center for former head coach Bobby Ross, helping the Terps to ACC titles in 1983 and 1984. He earned first-team All-America honors from The Sporting News in 1984 and was a first-team All-ACC selection in the same year.

Glover acknowledged Ross' influence in his career.

"Coach Ross totally changed the mindset of the program," Glover said. "He's a lot about family. He led us to three straight ACC Championships. That's something we're proud of as a program."

In his Glover's final two seasons in College Park, Maryland was undefeated in 12 conference games, posting a 17-7 overall mark. In his senior season, the Terrapins were ranked sixth nationally in total offense and eighth in scoring offense.

Drafted in the second round by the Detroit Lions, Glover enjoyed a 15-year NFL career--13 of which were with the Lions--and was selected to the NFL's Pro Bowl for three consecutive years (1995-97).

Glover is currently employed at the University of Maryland. He serves as the director of character education within the department of athletics, as well as an academic counselor and the football program's pro liaison.
