COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Elizabeth Hopkins posted two hat tricks to lead the Maryland women's water polo team to wins against division rivals Bucknell, 13-9, and No. 19 Princeton, 11-9 at Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium on Sunday.
The Terps (3-3, 2-0) snapped a 7-all tie late in the third quarter, scoring four straight goals over a five-minute stretch and then held off the Bison (3-4, 0-1) down the stretch. In the nightcap, Maryland fought off the No. 19 Tigers (3-1, 1-1) with physical defense and a strong 6-on-5 offense.
The Terrapins never trailed in either game, but both were highly competitive. Before their late run, Maryland could not build a substantial lead against Bucknell. Freshman Elina Goldenberg scored four goals, including two in the final period, on an array of flashy shots. Rachel Jordan and Hopkins each added three goals, while Christen Vagts and Jessica Ernst provided stellar on-the-ball defense.
"We didn't capitalize on our 6-on-5s in the first game," said Coach Carl Salyer, "we made some adjustments and were perfect in those situations against Princeton, and that was the key to our victory."
After converting only four of their ten 6-on-5 chances versus Bucknell, they completed all seven advantages against the Tigers. The Terps directed a well-balanced attack with six players accounting for their eleven goals, lead by Hopkins' three goal effort.
Maryland travels to New Jersey for the Princeton Invitational next weekend where they will play Brown and Villanova on Saturday and Wagner and Maris on Sunday.
