PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Maryland water polo team made it five straight Saturday as the Terps outlasted No. 20 Brown, 14-10, and had a dominating 11-1 win over Villanova in the opening day of action at the Princeton Invitational.
Elina Goldenberg and Bryndis Klein each had four goals on the day as the Terps (5-3) got contributions throughout the roster. Eight Terps scored against Brown and seven hit the back of the net vs. Villanova.
Ashleigh Jobson was solid in net vs. Brown, helping the Terps maintain its slim lead. Maryland led just 8-6 at halftime and 10-8 at the end of three, but four fourth-quarter goals sealed the win.
Maryland led from start to finish against the Wildcats. The Terrapins jumped out to a 5-0, first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Freshman goalie Shelby Reyes went the distance, posting eight blocks and two steals.
"Shelby got some good minutes and played well," head coach Carl Salyer said. "That was nice to see from a freshman goalie."
Klein had three goals against the Wildcats, while Shannon Simerly and Meghan Powers chipped in two apiece.
Rachel Jordan, Elizabeth Hopkins and Jill Lau were also multi-goal scorers on the day. Hopkins had three and Jordan notched two against Brown. Lau had one in each game.
"It was good to get two wins," Salyer said. "Brown was ranked just ahead of us in the polls (Terps received votes in this week's CWPA rankings) so that was a good win for us."
The Terps close out the tournament Sunday when they face Wagner (noon) and Marist (4:45 p.m.) at Princeton's DeNunzio Pool.
"We need to play well tomorrow," Salyer said. "They are two of the top MAAC schools."
