SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Maryland women's water polo team lost the first two matches of the season Saturday, losing 14-6 to No. 6 San Diego St., and 13-12 in overtime to Santa Clara, on the opening day of the Triton Invitational.
After struggling in the first match, the Terps (0-2) rebounded strongly against Santa Clara before letting the game slip from their grasp.
Freshman Elina Goldenberg had a strong performance, scoring a game-high four goals, as Maryland built an 8-5 halftime lead against Santa Clara. The Terps had a chance to score in the final seconds of regulation, but the shot was blocked, dislocating one of the goalie's fingers in the process.
"San Diego is good enough to make us pay for little mistakes, its hard to start the season against them," said Coach Carl Salyer. "In the first half against Santa Clara, we played exactly the way we wanted. We were firing on all cylinders."
The Terrapins received key contributions from their veterans throughout the day. Seniors Rachel Jordan and Christen Vagts each scored two goals in the morning game. Elizabeth Hopkins, Allison Beck, and Jordan each posted a pair of goals in the matinee. Senior goalkeeper Ashleigh Jobson played seven quarters, blocking thirteen shots over the course of the day.
The Terps close out play at the Triton Invitational with two games Sunday.
