BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 20 Maryland women's water polo team pushed two strong teams to the limit in losses to No. 11 UC Davis, 10-9, and No. 7 California, 9-6, on Saturday.
Rachel Jordan posted a hat trick and the Terps (8-8) got an early lead against the Aggies before falling in sudden death overtime in the matinee. In the second game, the Bears jumped out to a 3-point lead in the first period and held off a late Maryland assault to seal the victory.
"The girls fought very hard today, we just couldn't keep up with the other teams," said coach Carl Salyer. "Ashleigh Jobson did a terrific job in the net and we created a lot of opportunities."
After two scoreless overtime periods, UC Davis quickly ended the sudden death overtime period in 40 seconds with a five-meter goal by Lindsay Kiyama.
Jobson tallied seven saves against UC Davis before blocking nine versus the Bears. Rachel Jordan led the Terrapins with five goals in the two games. Elizabeth Hopkins and Carly Hoshko added two more apiece.
Maryland travels to play at Santa Clara University tomorrow to play at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
