COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland sophomore Abbey Adams has been named East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Co-Gymnast of the Week following her contributions to the Terrapins' performances during a pair of home meets last week to the end the 2009 regular season. Adams shares the honor with North Carolina State junior Taylor Seaman.
Adams secured Maryland's best all-around score of the season (career-best 39.275) to help the Terps beat EAGL foe Pittsburgh, 195.025 to 194.100, in a dual meet last Wednesday evening. The Spring, Texas, native claimed the individual title on uneven bars (9.875) and tied for second on both balance beam (9.800) and floor exercise (9.825). Both her bars and beam scores marked career highs.
The second-year Terrapin returned to action Saturday afternoon during a regular season finale quad meet with No. 15 Penn State, No. 19 Arizona and Yale that represented the final home competition for head coach Bob Nelligan. Adams finished fifth in the all-around competition (39.075), exceeding 39.000 for the fourth time this season, as she tied for fourth on uneven bars (9.800). Her efforts helped
Maryland beat Yale by posting a team score of 194.175. Adams, who anchored six events for Maryland (13-9) during the course of the two meets last week, has won 11 individual event titles this season. She holds is or tied for the team's top RQS in three of the four events (vault, uneven bars and floor exercise).
Having also claimed EAGL Specialist of the Week honors earlier this season for the week ending Feb. 3, Adams is the first Terrapin to be named Gymnast of the Week since teammate Brandi George did so last season on Feb. 25, 2008. Adams is eighth Maryland gymnast to receive the honor in the program's 34-year history.
"Abbey has blossomed into an outstanding gymnast this season," Nelligan said. "We are extremely proud of her for all her hard work and success, and we are looking forward to watching her compete in the EAGLs."
Adams and the rest of the Terps return to action this weekend at the 14th annual EAGL Championships in Raleigh, N.C. The eight-team league meet takes place at 3 p.m. Saturday in NC State's Reynolds Coliseum.
