SEASIDE, Calif. - The University of Maryland water polo team used a strong third quarter to break open a close game and cruise to a 17-6 victory over Cal State Monterey Bay (6-22) Tuesday.
Christen Vagts and Rachel Jordan each scored a game-high three goals, while Blaise Stanicic and Elina Goldenberg chipped in two apiece.
With Maryland clinging to a 6-5 halftime lead, Jordan and Stanicic helped break the game open in the third quarter. Jordan scored twice in the first minute of the period and Stanicic added a pair three minutes later as Maryland (9-9) scored all nine goals of the quarter.
"We had another slow start, trading goals in the second quarter," Maryland coach Carl Salyer said. "But Jordan stepped up in the third quarter with two quick goals and got the team back on track."
The win was the first for the Terps on their four-game West Coast road trip. They lost two games in overtime and fell to seventh-ranked Cal, 7-6.
"It was a good performance to end the trip on," Salyer said.
Maryland is back in action on Saturday, March 28 when it plays in the Fluid Four Tournament in Bloomington, Ind.
