  • Six Maryland Gymnasts Garner League Honors

RALEIGH, N.C. - The University of Maryland gymnastics team will have plenty at stake when it competes in the 14th annual East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships at 3 p.m. Saturday in NC State's Reynolds Coliseum.

The eight-team league meet also consists of No. 20 West Virginia, host NC State, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Pittsburgh, George Washington and Rutgers. Along with Maryland, the rest of the EAGL's top-six teams each rank among the top-40 in the Troester National Poll.

The Terrapins (13-9, 8-3 EAGL) remain on the cusp of securing their first National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Regional Championships berth since 2004. Maryland currently ranks 35th in the nation with a team Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 194.595, and the top-36 teams ultimately will qualify for regional competition, which takes places at six sites on April 4. EAGL foes New Hampshire (37th) and Pittsburgh (38th) remain in striking distance of the Terps for the final regional spots.

Maryland, which ranks third in the EAGL on both uneven bars (48.755 RQS) and floor exercise (48.820), has been led all season by all-around performers Abbey Adams and Brandi George. Adams, who claimed EAGL Co-Gymnast of the Week honors following her performance last week during a pair of home meets, ranks fifth in the league on both uneven bars (9.820) and floor exercise (9.845) and tied for sixth on all-around (38.930). George stands third on both all-around (39.115) and balance beam (9.815).

Saturday's competition potentially represents the final meet of Bob Nelligan's career at Maryland. The longtime head coach, who has spearheaded the program since 1979, will retire following the conclusion of the season and be replaced by his son, associate head coach Brett Nelligan. The elder Nelligan currently has 491 career victories and is looking for his squad to claim its 19th regional berth during his 31-year tenure.

Live stats will be available for Saturday's EAGL Championships. A live streaming video broadcast of the meet is also available over the Internet free of charge.

    Last Time Out
The Terrapins played host to their final two home meets of the season last week. During last Wednesday's dual meet with Pittsburgh, sophomore Abbey Adams and junior Brandi George led the way in helping the Terrapins claim their second best team score of the season and down the Panthers, 195.025 to 194.100.

Adams and George finished first and second, respectively, in the all-around competition, with both gymnasts placing in the top-five in all four events. Adams claimed Maryland's best all-around score (39.275) of the season, winning on uneven bars (9.875) and finishing tied for second on balance beam and floor exercise. George (39.175 all-around) tied for second on both vault and beam.

The back-and-forth competition resulted in lead changes after every rotation. Maryland led by one-tenth of a point at the halfway mark, and Pittsburgh had a similar lead heading into the final rotation. In the end, however, the Terps, who tied their season-best score on uneven bars (48.800), proved too strong and succeeded at sweeping the regular season series from the Panthers.

Returning to action last Saturday, The Terps tallied a team score of 194.175 during their quad-meet with No. 15 Penn State, No. 19 Arizona and Yale, exceeding a mark of 194.000 for the eighth time in their last 10 meets. That score placed the Terps third, behind the Nittany Lions (196.125) and Wildcats (195.300), and ahead of the Bulldogs (165.625) in each teams' regular season finale meet.

Saturday's meet marked the final home meet for head coach Bob Nelligan, who will retire following the conclusion of the 2009 season. Nelligan earned his 491st career victory and finished the 19th winning regular season of his storied career at Maryland.

Freshman Kyra Phillips provided a highlight during Nelligan's final home meet, tying her career-best mark on vault (9.900) to claim a share of the event title. Phillips' performance on vault tied for the fourth-best individual score in school history, and helped the Terps secure their second-best vault team total of the season (48.950).
