Maryland Water Polo Finishes Fluid Four With Victory Over No. 18 Indiana

March 29, 2009

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Maryland women's water polo team used a strong offensive assault to defeat No. 18 Indiana, 11-9, in the Fluid Four finale on Sunday.

The Terps (10-11) bounced back from two tough losses on the first day with a strong victory versus a ranked opponent. Freshman phenom Elina Goldenberg scored two of her season-high five goals down the stretch to put the game safely out of reach.

"The girls played with a lot of passion today," said coach Carl Salyer. "The number of ejections were one-sided against us, but we dodged those bullets and made some good defensive stops to get a good win."

Goldenberg received a lot of help from her veteran teammates. Seniors Elizabeth Hopkins and Rachel Jordan each scored two goals, while Blaise Stanicic and junior Shannon Simerly added one apiece. Goalkeeper Ashleigh Jobson tallied eight blocks in her complete game effort in the cage.

With the Terrapins holding onto a tenuous 9-8 lead, Goldenberg tallied two quick goals to effectively end any chances of a Hoosier comeback.

Maryland's final three games come against their CWPA Southern Division foes, starting with a home match against George Washington on Wednesday. The game begins at 7 p.m. in the Eppley Recreation Center. It will also be streamed live on-line through ACC Select.
