Profit Finishes Second in ACC Heptathlon

Kiani Profit became only the third Terrapin woman to top 5,000 points in the heptathlon Friday with her second-place finish at the Atlantic Coast Conference Outdoor Championships. Dwight Barbiasz finished third in the men's high jump to also earn All-ACC honors.
Profit finished with 5,276 points in the heptathlon, the second-best total in Maryland history. She led a trio of Maryland finishers who scored team points in the event, as Chanel Williams was fifth at 4,812 and Katie Rogus was eighth at 4,284. Fourteen of Maryland's 20 team points after two days of competition came in the heptathlon.
Also Friday, Barbiasz cleared 6-9.50 to earn third place in the men's high jump and earn All-ACC designation with his top-three finish. David Edwards-Brennan also picked up a team point for the Terps with his eighth-place finish at 6-6.75.
Michelle Fedrick set herself up for a promising final day of competition, as she heads into Saturday's final in the 400 as the top qualifier. Her time of 53.85 was a career-best. In the same event, teammate Melony McKay placed 13th with a time of 56.64, while Tolulope Olugbemi had a time of 57.12 to finish 16th in the prelims.
Profit also qualified for the NCAA Regionals and ECAC Championships with her time of 1:00.18 in the 400 meter hurdles.
Erin Matyus qualified for tomorrow's 1,500-meter finals by finishing 11th with a career-best time of 4:33.44, ahead of teammate Christina Nelson, who ran 4:40.46.
On the men's side, Zack Ray qualified for tomorrow's finals in the 400 meters by finishing third with a time of 53.10. Ray also qualified for the finals in the 110-meter hurdles by placing eighth with a time of 14.61, with Legonn Haskins finishing ninth in the event with a time of 14.67.
In the 800 meters, Tommy Friscia also qualified for tomorrow's finals by coming in sixth at 1:51.77. The time is a career best for the sophomore and qualified him for the IC4A Championships.
Freshman Alex Lundy finished ninth in the 10,000 meter run on Thursday with a time of 31:44.89. Anthony Walker also placed ninth in the 400 meter dash in 48.41, ahead of Jeremy Samuels in 10th with a time of 48.46.Chris Brown and Kyle Rauser also competed in the event.
After two days of competition, the Maryland women rank eighth with 20 total points, while the men sit in ninth place with 8 points. The Terrapins will compete tomorrow during the final day of competition of the 2009 ACC Outdoor Championships.
