Fedrick, Profit Advance At NCAA Track

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Both University of Maryland participants - Michelle Fedrick and Kiani Profit - advanced to the semifinal round in their respective events Wednesday in the first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships being hosted by the University of Arkansas.
Profit finished second in her heat and eighth overall with a season-best time of 58.01 in the women's 400 hurdles. With a finish among the top three in her heat, Profit advanced to the semifinals, to be run Thursday at 7:45 p.m. EDT.
Only USC's Dalilah Muhammad finished ahead of Profit in the first heat of the 400 hurdles, running 57.38. Nicole Leach of UCLA had the fastest time of the event, going 56.46 to win her heat.
Profit will also compete in the opening day of the heptathlon on Thursday, beginning with the 100-meter hurdles at 12:15 p.m.
Fedrick was fourth in her heat of the women's 400 meters with a time of 53.82 and was the first of three competitors who advanced to the semifinals based on their time. She was one of 18 student-athletes who moved from the preliminaries to the semis, which are scheduled for Friday night at 8:15 p.m.
Fedrick competed in the strongest of the five heats, as all five competitors from that trial advanced to the semis. Jessica Beard of Texas A&M won that heat and was the fastest overall with a mark of 51.61.
