CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
Maryland placed three players on the 2009 All-ACC Men's Lacrosse Team, which was announced tonight at the Championship Banquet. Senior All-American Dan Groot was joined on the team by sophomores Max Schmidt and Ryan Young.
All four ACC programs were represented on this year's All-ACC team, with Virginia placing four representatives to the 2009 squad, which is determined by a vote of the league's four head coaches. Duke and North Carolina each had two players named to the team.
Groot earns his first All-ACC honor after turning in a solid all-around season. He leads all Maryland midfielders with 29 points on 18 goals and 11 assists. For the season he is shooting 34 percent and has put more than 62 percent of his shots on cage. In addition to his offensive contributions, Groot has been a terrific defender for the Terps, picking-up 17 groundballs and causing nine turnovers.
Schmidt is the only close defender named to this season's All-ACC team and has been the Terps' most consistent performer this year. He leads the team with 19 caused turnovers and is among the team leaders with 29 groundballs.
Young is the catalyst of the Maryland offense and has greatly improved his production from his freshman season. This season he is second on the team in points with 30 on 17 goals and 13 assists. He leads all Terp starters with a 40.5 shooting percentage and has put 81 percent of his shots on goal.
Duke's Ned Crotty garnered ACC Player of the Year accolades, while Virginia's Steele Stanwick and Dom Starsia were honored as the ACC Freshman and Coach of the Year, respectively.
