Maryland Water Polo Falls to Bucknell

April 5, 2009

LEWISBERG, Pa. - The University of Maryland women's water polo team rallied back from another slow start behind four goals from Rachel Jordan, but ultimately lost in overtime to Bucknell, 15-13, at Kinney Natatorium on Saturday.

The Terps (11-12, 4-1), who could have clinched the division with a win, lost their first game to a division foe since April 27, 2008.

After trailing 5-1 just before the half, the Terrapins scored nine of the following thirteen goals to take a 10-9 advantage in the fourth quarter. Unable to put it away, Maryland and Bucknell went into overtime tied, 11-11.

Unfortunately, the Terps could not carry their second half momentum into overtime, as the Bison scored four goals in 90 seconds to take a commanding 15-12 lead after the first overtime. Maryland scored the lone second overtime goal to close the game, 15-13.

After the game, Maryland head coach Carl Salyer emphasized the importance of coming out fast. "Blown starts are killing us. We need to figure out how to get games started."

The Terps were shut out in the first stanza and held to only two goals in the first half before breaking out with a five-goal third period.

Jordan led Maryland scorers with four goals, giving her 37 total on the season. Elina Goldenberg posted her seventh hat trick of the season; her 46 goals lead the team and are tied for second most for a freshman in Terrapin water polo history.

Blaise Stanicic notched two goals, and Elizabeth Hopkins, Shannon Simerly, and Allison Beck rounded out the scoring with one apiece. Ashleigh Jobson played the entire game in the net, finishing with eight saves.

Maryland finishes their regular season with a 1:00 match at Princeton on Sunday.
