COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Defending national champion Maryland will have one last tune-up before the 2009 regular season begins when it plays an exhibition match against Villanova on Thursday at Ludwig Field. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Maryland, which captured both the NCAA National Championship and ACC Tournament title a year ago, tied American, 1-1, last Sunday in Washington D.C. All available players saw action in the match. Casey Townsend netted the lone score for the Terps, courtesy of assists from seniors Doug Rodkey and Drew Yates. The goalkeeper tandem of Will Swaim and Zac MacMath combined for nine saves as the Terps outshot the Eagles, 17-11.
Villanova, members of the BIG EAST Conference, went 7-10-2 in 2008. Maryland is undefeated in all three regular season matchups with the Wildcats.
The Terps, which were recently picked eighth by Soccer America's preseason poll, will officially kick off the 2009 campaign against No. 9 UCLA on Friday, Sept. 4 at Ludwig Field. Maryland then welcomes No. 7 California two days later on Sunday.
Admission for Thursday's exhibition against Villanova is free to the public.
