COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Former Maryland star Crystal Langhorne has been added to the 2009 USA Basketball Women's National Team fall training camp roster, it was announced Tuesday.
Langhorne was one of 14 players added to the roster Tuesday, all of whom are playing for four open spots on the 12-person 2009-12 national team roster as it prepares for the 2010 FIBA World Championship.
"What an incredible honor for Crystal and one that she has truly earned," Maryland head coach Brenda Frese said. "Nothing she achieves will ever surprise us. She is such a classy young lady and would make a terrific representative for our country. It is even neater when I think that she's the daughter of immigrant parents and she's achieving the American dream in many ways. I'm so proud of how successful Crystal has been on and off the court."
Training camp is scheduled for Sept. 30-Oct. 5 at American University in Washington, D.C. The camp will be highlighted by the 2009 USA Basketball Women's National Team Fall Showcase at noon on Oct. 4. The showcase event will include team drills, an intra-squad scrimmage, question and answer session with head coach Geno Auriemma and a post-practice autograph session with certain players.
Tickets for the showcase event may be purchased for $5 by calling 202-885-TIXX or online at aueagles.com.
International experience is nothing new for Langhorne. The Willingboro, N.J., native won multiple gold medals with various USA Junior teams and was USA Basketball's athlete of the year in 2005. Most recently, Langhorne competed with the U.S. National Team in April 2008 as part of the Good Luck Beijing Tournament, helping lead the Americans to a silver medal in a pre-Olympic tournament in Beijing, China.
Selected players chosen from the training camp will travel to Ekaterinburg, Russia, where the USA will participate in the 2009 UMMC Ekaterinburg International Invitational.
The invitation to training camp is one in a string of recent accomplishments for Langhorne. Maryland's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, Langhorne was named the WNBA's Most Improved Player last week, as she led the Washington Mystics to the playoffs in her second professional season.
The other 13 players added to the training camp roster Tuesday include: Jayne Appel, Alana Beard, Swin Cash, Tina Charles, Shameka Christon, Candice Dupree, Lindsey Harding, Ebony Hoffman, Asjha Jones, Angel McCoughtry, Maya Moore, Lindsay Whalen and Candice Wiggins.
Those 14 players join the eight already-chosen members of the national team, which includes Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings, Diana Taurasi, Seimone Augustus, Sylvia Fowles, Kara Lawson, Candace Parker and Cappie Pondexter.
