COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland Terrapins (11-2) will close their non-conference portion of the schedule against St. Joseph's (5-7) Sunday, Jan. 3 at 2 p.m. ET in Comcast Center.
The Terps were recently crowned the Terrapin Classic champions after defeating both Stony Brook and UNC Wilmington this past week. Sophomore Lynetta Kizer was named Most Valuable Player for her double-double performance against SBU and solid stats against UNCW. Kizer finished the tournament totaling 23 points, 18 rebounds and four steals.
St. Joseph's brings its own MVP, Ashley Prim, who recorded her first career double-double in the title game of the Hawk Classic. The Hawks defeated Boston University 71-58 to claim the crown. St. Joseph's is averaging 63.8 points and 38.2 rebounds per game. The Hawks have also snatched 9.4 steals per contest. One player from SJU is putting up double-figures every game and that is Brittany Ford who averages just over 11 points per game. As St. Joseph's leading scorer and second-leading rebounder, Ford was named to the Preseason All-Conference Third Team.
Three individuals are at the top of the list for Maryland averaging double-figures, including two freshmen. First-year players Diandra Tchatchouang and Tianna Hawkins, both have earned weekly conference honors for their efforts. Tchatchouang leads the squad with 14.0 points per game. Hawkins is the team leader in rebounds averaging 8.5 per game and leads the nation in field goal percentage with a 63.6 clip. Hawkins was recently named ACC Rookie of the Week after earning her third career double-double against American. Kizer is the other Terrapin averaging double-digit points with 13.0.
Maryland owns a 7-3 advantage in the all-time series record with St. Joseph's. The Terps have won the last seven contests however, the teams have not met since 1991. The other streak the Terrapins look to continue is their unprecedented home court winning streak. Maryland is currently at a program-record 46 straight home wins.
Sunday's game is the first for both teams in 2010. Starting on Thursday, Jan. 7 the Terrapins take on their first ACC opponent, N.C. State, on the road.
