COLLEGE PARK, Md. - With only one of four conference games in the comforts of home so far, Maryland welcomes Miami and No. 6/7 Duke this week to Comcast Center. The Terrapins take on Miami on Thursday, January 21 at 7 p.m. ET and Duke on Sunday, January 24 at 8 p.m. ET.
The game against Miami will be available for viewing via webcast on TerpsTV at umterps.com. Live radio coverage is also available at WMUCSports.com.
After a three-game week Maryland (14-4 overall, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) came away with two wins, one over a ranked opponent, and one loss. The Terps had gone on the road to defeat No. 19 UVA 61-60 during ESPN2's Big Monday game and returned home to extend their program home winning streak to 48 with a victory over Boston College. Hitting the road again, the Terrapins were unable to take down No. 10 North Carolina after knotting the score at halftime, 33-33.
Sophomore Kim Rodgers had a big night against UNC after returning from a four game hiatus after breaking a bone in her left hand against UNC-Wilmington. She hit three shots from behind the arc, including the one to tie the game after the first 20 minutes. Rodgers also pulled down a season-high nine rebounds and finished with 11 points. The Virginia Beach, Va., native was also perfect from the free throw line and has hit 19 consecutive shots dating back to November. She leads the league in free throw percentage with a .879 clip.
Senior Lori Bjork hit four treys in Carmichael Auditorium, the third straight game she has connected on four or more of her three-point shots. She finished with a game-high 18 points.
The Terrapins continue to see great production from their freshmen class. Dara Taylor dished her 100th assist at UNC, putting her at No. 8 in the Maryland record books for most assists by a freshman. Taylor also leads the ACC in assists averaging 5.8 per game. Tianna Hawkins registered a double-double, the fourth of her career, against Boston College with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Hawkins is third in the league and leads all freshmen in rebounding with 8.6 per game. She is also second in the conference in field goal percentage at 61.1 percent. Diandra Tchatchouang continues to lead the team and all freshmen in scoring with 13.6 points per contest.
Miami (13-4, 1-2) is coming off of a two-game skid after losing at home to No. 7 Duke and on the road to Wake Forest. The Hurricanes had recently broken into the top-25 AP poll for the first time since Feb. 23, 2004, after upsetting No. 13 Florida State. Thursday's game will be the second straight road contest for the Canes. The loss to the Demon Deacons was Miami's first and only road loss of the season thus far.
Canes sophomore Riquna Williams leads the conference in scoring averaging 21.4 points a game while sophomore Shenise Johnson comes in at No. 3 averaging 18.1 points. Senior Diane Barnes leads against the boards for Miami, ranking No. 2 in the league with 9.3 per game.
The Hurricanes were predicted to finish eighth in the league in the ACC Preseason polls. Miami is a conference leader in both offensive rebounds and three-point field goals made. They average 19.2 offensive boards a game and 6.6 treys a contest.
Maryland leads the all-time series with Miami, 8-1, and has also won all three games the teams have played in Comcast Center. The last time the Terrapins dropped a game to the Hurricanes was Dec. 29, 2002, 97-66, on the road. The Terps defeated Miami last season 89-64 on March 1 at Miami. The Terrapins have won all 12 home games, carrying a home winning streak that extends as far back as 2007 and encompasses 48 games. The last time Maryland dropped a game at home was Feb. 18, 2007 when Duke defeated the Terps, 69-57.
Maryland remains at home to face the Duke Blue Devils on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. The game will be televised nationally on Fox Sports Network and will be broadcast by Terrapin Sports Radio Network. Single-game ticket packages are available for purchase online at umterps.com or by calling the Terrapin Ticket Office at 1-800-IM-A-TERP.
