COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Maryland will be taking a break from conference play as they head to Farmville, Va., Sunday Jan. 31 to play Longwood at 2 p.m. ET.
The Terrapins and Lancers have never met on the hard court. Maryland is 4-0 this season against teams they have met for the first time. Only one of those teams has managed to score more than 50 points against the Terps.
Maryland is coming off a needed 60-44 conference road win against Virginia Tech. Senior Lori Bjork registered a game and season-high 22 points while sophomore Lynetta Kizer added 18 points and pulled down a career-best 16 boards.
Kizer helped keep the Terrapins afloat after the Hokies made a second half comeback, cutting the seven-point lead down to three. After being fouled on a layup, the Woodbridge, Va., native missed the free throw but followed through with the rebound and put back. A steal and assist by freshman Dara Taylor to Bjork extended the Maryland lead and Kizer hit another layup for a 9-0 Terrapin run.
Maryland's tenacity underneath the basket earned them 34 points inside the paint and 49 rebounds. Freshman Jackie Nared came in the second half to help the Terrapins offensively, grabbing six offensive rebounds and playing 14 of her 19 minutes in the last 20. Taylor dished out nine assists with just three turnovers and added two steals.
The Terrapins held Virginia Tech to just 29.3 percent shooting from the field and just one three-point field goal (1-of-12). The Hokies were the sixth team the Terps have held to 49 points or less this season.
Longwood just halted an eight-game slide after defeating Winthrop at home, 62-51. The Lancers are hitting 67.5 percent of their shots at the free throw line led by Krystal Garrison who has hit 30-of-38 for a .789 clip. Chelsea Coward leads the team in points averaging 10.7 a game and Brittanni Billups is grabbing 5.0 rebounds per contest, a team high. Billups is also averaging double-figure points, 10.0.
The Terps return home to host Georgia Tech on Friday, Feb. 5 at 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised on Comcast Sports Net, Fox Sports South and Fox Sports Florida.
