COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland gymnastics team (6-4) won the balance beam competition Saturday afternoon with its score of 48.800 in its home quad meet against No. 16 Denver, West Virginia and Rutgers. The Terrapins finished second in the event with a 193.925, just behind EAGL competitor West Virginia who scored a 194.600.
Their 48.800 was their highest team beam score of the year by more than .700. The Terps' success in the event was well-received by judges, as they trailed by just .100 going into the final rotation of the evening after competing on beam.
Junior Abigail Adams won the individual beam competition with her score of 9.850, while seniors Brandi George and Talia Tossone closed out the top three with 9.800. Freshman Briana Melander finished fifth in the event with her score of 9.750.
The Terps started the evening competing on the vault. Sophomore Kyra Phillips came in second in the event with a 9.800. Freshmen Ally Krikorian and Kesley Cofsky, as well as Adams, also earned spots in the top ten with a 9.750 and 9.725, respectively.
On bars, Adams and junior Kaitlyn Joseph finished fifth and sixth in the event with a 9.775 and 9.725 respectively, while Cofsky came in tenth with her 9.700. George and Cofsky tied for second in the floor exercise with their scores of 9.825, both season highs.
Adams also finished second on the all-around competition with her score of 38.575. Cofsky rounded out the top five with a 38.350.
The Terrapins defeated No. 16 Denver, with its score of 192.850 and fellow EAGL opponent Rutgers, 190.550.
The Terps will be home again next weekend to host North Carolina and Towson Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the Comcast Center Pavilion.
