COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terrapins open conference play against N.C. State (10-5) in Raleigh, N.C., on Thursday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m. ET in Reynolds Coliseum. Maryland finished last year with a 12-2 record in the conference's regular season on their way to the 2009 Atlantic Coast Conference title.
Although the Wolfpack lead in the overall series, 40-33, the Terrapins have taken the win in the last five meetings. But Maryland has also only won in Reynolds Coliseum six times out of their 27 visits, including the last two.
Maryland (12-2) closed out the majority of their non-conference slate with a 79-69 win over Saint Joseph's on Sunday. In the win, freshman Diandra Tchatchouang and sophomore Anjale Barrett each had career games eclipsing the 20-point mark. Tchatchouang was recognized by the ACC as Rookie of the Week for her five blocks and 25-point performance against SJU. Barrett put up 20 points of her own as the two combined for over half of the Terps' points.
Maryland's Tianna Hawkins and Lynetta Kizer continued to impress as well with double-figure rebounds and points throughout the last three games. Hawkins grabbed a total of 33 rebounds, averaging 11.0 per game over the last week. Kizer had a double-double effort against Stony Brook which helped her earn MVP honors in the Terrapin Classic.
The Terrapins have won their last four games and look to continue their solid start into 2010.
N.C. State faces its first ACC team under the direction of first-year head coach Kellie Harper. The Wolfpack recently defeated Columbia in a close 60-58 game. Sharnise Beal preserved the Pack's victory by blocking a three-point attempt in the final second. Junior Tia Bell added a double-double effort off the bench with 14 points and 10 rebounds against Columbia. N.C. State has won their last three games defeating Seton Hall, Southern California and Columbia.
Maryland will be looking for its second road win of the season.
