COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
Freshman Mary Cushman tied her career-high with 15 kills on a .343 attack percentage, but the University of Maryland volleyball team lost to Miami, 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 25-16, 25-22) as they set a season-high with 1,551 in attendance at the Comcast Center Friday night.
After losing the first set, the Terps (13-7, 4-4 ACC) won the second decisively thanks to a team-high .382 attack percentage with 14 kills and only a single error. Yet Miami (14-5, 4-4 ACC) would answer, winning the third and fourth sets by a combined 16 points to win the match and return to .500 in conference play.
Sophomore Kara Bates set a new season-high with 14 kills and junior Lisa Scott recorded nine kills on a team-high .389 attack percentage. Scott also played well defensively, recording three total blocks for Maryland.
For the Hurricanes, Lane Carrico earned a double-double for her match-high 24 kills and 16 digs. Ryan Shaffer had a match-high 26 kills and Katie Gallagher tallied a game-high 53 assists for Miami.
With the loss, the Terps fall back to .500 within the conference and are now tied with, among others, Miami at 4-4. Maryland remains a single victory away from tying its win total from last season and its 13-7 record is the best under third-year head coach Tim Horsmon.
The Terps will look to rebound from Friday's loss against Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Semionles are currently ranked No. 22 in the country and in second place within the conference, behind undefeated Duke. Maryland holds a 19-17 all-time series lead over Florida State, which swept the Terps in '09.
