Freshman Mary Cushman set a new career-high with 18 kills on a .350 attack percentage Sunday afternoon as the University of Maryland volleyball team upset the Florida State Seminoles, 3-2 (25-21, 28-26, 25-19, 25-18, 16-14).
Trailing two games to one, the Terps (14-7, 5-4 ACC) rallied to take the fourth set, 25-18, thanks to Cushman's set-high four kills and sophomore Remy McBain's 11 of her career-high 54 assists. In the fifth and final set, Florida State(14-4, 5-3 ACC) fought back to a 13-13 tie before junior Maddi Lee used her ninth kill on the afternoon to give Maryland the one-point edge. A bad set by Florida State's Duygu Duzceler gave the Terps their winning 16th point .
"We really executed today," said Lee. "This is a huge win for us...We can beat anyone in the country if we play the right way."
Senior Brittney Grove set new season-high marks with 14 kills and six of Maryland's game-high 13 blocks. Grove's .429 attack percentage was the highest by either team. Sophomore Kara Bates recorded 14 kills, a season-high for the second game in a row, thanks to a season-high .323 attack percentage.
For the Seminoles, Visnja Djurdjevic notched a double-double with 16 kills and 14 digs. Rachel Morgan and Lauren Young each hit .375 Sunday to lead Florida State, which entered the season ranked No. 15 in the country.
With the win, the Terps tied their win total from 2009, when they finished the season 14-19.
"They played their rear ends off today," said head coach Tim Horsmon. "I think this is a huge win for our program...To beat a ranked opponent that is a big thing for our program."
