COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The Maryland football team completed an efficient 90-minute workout on Thursday amidst windy, but sunny conditions at the on-campus practice facility in preparation for this weekend's Atlantic Coast Conference road game at Boston College.
It marked the Terps' (4-2, 1-1) final practice before they take on the Eagles (2-4, 0-3) at 1 p.m. Saturday from Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass. The game will be broadcast on the 15-station Terrapin Sports radio Network and streamed live on ESPN3.com.
"I think we had a pretty good week of practice," head coach Ralph Friedgen said after the workout. "Defensively, I think all four days have been very good. Offensively, we weren't very sharp yesterday, but Monday, Tuesday and today we were sharp."
Friedgen hopes a solid week of preparation translates into a good performance in a hostile environment against the Eagles, who have the top-ranked rushing defense in the ACC (90.3 yards per game) and possess the No. 1 rusher in the league (Montel Harris - 96.3 ypg).
"It's probably as good of a week of practice we've had in a while," Friedgen said. "I think they're ready to play. I told them if they play like they practice I think we'll be fine."
Following practice, Friedgen announced that linebacker Alex Wujciak, offensive lineman Andrew Gonnella and punt returner Tony Logan will serve as captains for Saturday's game. He also named wide receiver Alex Fletcher as the offensive scout team player of the week and cornerback Kevin Brown as the defensive scout team player of the week.
Wide receiver Devonte Campbell, a Forestville, Md., native, will carry the Maryland flag onto the field Saturday and safety Antwine Perez will bring the American flag.
Terp Notes:
Wujciak a Quarterfinalist for Lott Trophy: Senior linebacker Alex Wujciak has been named a quarterfinalist for the Lott Trophy, which is awarded to college football's Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. Wujciak, who is also a candidate for the Nagurski Trophy, Lombardi Award, Butkus Award and Bednarik Award, is one of 23 players on the quarterfinal list. Wujciak ranks second in the ACC and 11th nationally in tackles (11.4 per game). Now in its seventh year, the Lott Trophy, named after NFL Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott and sponsored by The Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation in Newport Beach, Calif., is given to the player who exhibits the same characteristics Lott embodied during his distinguished career: Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity. The semi-finalists will be announced Nov. 3 and the four finalists Nov. 24. For more details go to www.lottimpacttrophy.com
Terp Tidbits: Friedgen said after Thursday's practice that punter Travis Baltz will continue as the No. 1 place-kicker. Nick Ferrara, who missed the first two weeks of the season with an injury, will handle kickoffs. ... wide receiver Torrey Smith, slowed recently by an ankle injury, is likely to remain as the No. 1 kickoff return option. Trenton Hughes split kickoff return duty with Smith last week, but Da'Rel Scott and Tony Logan are other options ... the Terps, who matched a season high with 10 penalties in last week's Clemson game, had officials at Tuesday and Wednesday's practice in an effort to improve in that area.
