COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team will open the 40th season in program history Saturday at 5 p.m. against the Monmouth Hawks at the Comcast Center.
The Terps, who are ranked No. 21 in the preseason Associated Press poll, are 32-7 all-time in season openers. Maryland owns the all-time series over Monmouth 3-0 and the two teams haven't met since 2005.
Maryland won its two preseason exhibitions last week over local opponents Gallaudet and District of Columbia. After Saturday's game, the Terrapins will head across town to play at No. 13 Georgetown Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
The Terrapins have one of the youngest rosters in the country this year, as there are no seniors on the team. Head coach Brenda Frese and her staff bring in the No. 2 recruiting class in the country. Four starters from last year's 21-win team return, including All-ACC Third Team member Lynetta Kizer and All-ACC Freshman team honoree Diandra Tchatchouang.
The Terrapins were picked to finish fourth in the ACC's Preseason Predicted Order of Finish. Freshman Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas were named to the ACC's Newcomers Watch List.
Comcast Center is one of the nation's top ten toughest places to play. Since its opening in 2002, the Terrapins are 111-23 in Comcast Center with a winning percentage of .823. Maryland has led the ACC in attendance since 2007.
