TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -
Mary Cushman led the University of Maryland volleyball team with 12 kills on .370 hitting and two blocks in a Friday night volleyball match at Florida State, won by the Seminoles, 3-0 (25-21-25-20, 25-20).
Following a first-set defeat in which they never led, the Terps (19-11, 10-8 ACC) used a 13-5 run in the second to lead the Seminoles (19-9, 11-7 ACC) by a score of 15-12. Yet, Florida State would counter with a 13-5 run of its own to win the set by a score of 25-20.
In the third, Maryland didn't give in, fighting to take a 17-15 lead late in the set. But Florida State capitalized on five Terrapin errors to take the lead and, ultimately, the match.
Cushman's 12 kills were a team-high for the Terps, who were held to .101 hitting on the night. Lisa Scott's knocked in seven kills along with a match-high .385 attack percentage. Named Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Monday, Brittney Grove pitched in six digs, five block assists and three kills.
For the Seminoles, Jekaterina Stepanova recorded a double-double with a game-high 13 kills and 10 digs. Visnja Djurdjevic knocked in nine kills for Florida State, which jumps Maryland for third-place in the conference.
Maryland will travel to Coral Gables to take on the Miami Hurricanes Sunday before closing out the regular season at Boston College on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
