COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Jenkins Monzey, Mark Hartenstine and Ben Dorsay all finished third at their respective weight divisions as a number of University of Maryland wrestlers competed at the East Stroudsburg Open in East Stroudsburg, Pa. on Saturday.
"I am happy with our performance at East Stroudsburg University," said head coach Kerry McCoy. "They all wrestled hard. Jenkins and Mark did a great job after losing early and fighting back to take third. It was a great experience for everyone who competed."
After losing in the first 125 pound bout against Scott Filbert of U.S. Military Prep, Monzey used seven straight decisions to clinch third place.
At 141 pounds, Hartenstine opened the tournament strong with a 4:42 fall over Eric Harper of Gloucester C.C. After losing, 2-1, to Rider's Vinny Fava, Hartenstine dominated the bottom half of the bracket, with two pins, one technical fall and one major decision, to take third.
Ben Dorsay, at 149 pounds, followed suit by earning third place after countering a fourth-round 6-3 loss to Lehigh's Anthony Satupo with four more victories capped by a 9-7 decision over Rutgers' William Ashnault.
Ty Snook and Frank Goodwin also placed for Maryland.
Snook recorded four bout victories, including two technicall falls, to earn fourth while Goodwin used back-to-back first-period pins to claim sixth.
Asper Outlasts Onufer at All-Star Classic
At the 45th Annual NWCA All-Star Classic in Fresno, Calif., No. 4 Josh Asper defeated No. 6 Shane Onufer of Wyoming, 3-2. Though only exhibition matches, the All-Star Classic features some of the nation's marquee wrestlers each year. Asper becomes just the fourth Maryland wrestler to compete at the classic.
"Josh did a great job against a very tough opponent," said McCoy. "It was good for Josh to have this kind of match to keep him focused and solidify the things he needs to continue working on to be the best he can be."
The Terps will resume play after Thanksgiving at the Northeast Duals in Troy, N.Y. on Nov. 27.
