Freshman Alyssa Thomas of the 22nd-ranked Maryland women's basketball team was named the Atlantic Coast Conference's Rookie of the Week the league announced Monday.
Thomas was named the East Carolina Thanksgiving Tournament MVP over the weekend, as she led the Terrapins in scoring with 14 points against East Carolina Friday and 15 over UMass Saturday. She averaged 14.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists over the two games.
She has started all six games for the Terrapins so far this season and is the Terps' leading scorer with an average of 12.0 points a contest. She is averaging 2.8 steals a game, which ties her for sixth in the conference in steals.
Maryland beat East Carolina 76-60 Friday in the tournament and UMass 82-50 Saturday. Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang was named to the All-Tournament team along with Thomas.
Maryland will head to West Lafayette, Ind. this week to take on Purdue Thursday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Terps and the Boilermakers will tip off at 6:30 p.m. and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
