GREENSBORO, N.C. -
Maryland's Torrey Smith, Antwine Perez and Danny O'Brien were honored Monday by the Atlantic Coast Conference for their performances in Maryland's 38-31 win over then-No. 21 NC State on Saturday.
O'Brien earned ACC Rookie of the Week honors for the fifth time this season, while Perez was voted as the league's top defensive back for the second time. Smith, who had a school-record four touchdown catches, was voted as the league's top offensive back for the first time this year and was also named the Rivals.com ACC Player of the Week.
Smith turned in one of the most outstanding performances by a receiver in school history, setting career highs with 14 receptions and 224 receiving yards, the third most in a single game in school history. His 14 receptions were just two off the ACC record.
The junior wide receiver from Colonial Beach, Va., became just the second player in Maryland history to surpass 1,000 receiving yards for the season. Smith finished the regular season with 12 TD catches, which is a Maryland record and tied for the ninth most in a season in ACC history. He had 272 all-purpose yards in the game (224 receiving, 48 KOR) and broke Lamont Jordan's school record for career all-purpose yards. His 5,183 yards rank seventh on the ACC career list.
Perez had a terrific all-around game, contributing a team- and career-high 11 tackles in his final home game. He also forced and recovered a fumble, broke up one potential touchdown pass, had one of the team's eight tackles for loss and returned a blocked kick 35 yards to set up a field goal.
O'Brien, meanwhile, became the first Maryland quarterback to throw for 400 yards in a game since 1993, racking up a career-high 417 yards while completing 33 of 47 passes for four touchdowns and no interceptions. The freshman was at his best in the second half, completing 13 of 17 passes for 227 yards and three scores, while leading the Terps to scores on four of their final six drives of the game.
O'Brien has 21 TD passes this season, the second most in school history. He has accounted for 23 total TDs, the first Maryland player to do so since 2003.
