COLLEGE PARK, Md. - A flurry of long-range blasts launched the No. 3 Maryland men's soccer team past Coastal Carolina, 5-0, on Senior Night Friday at Ludwig Field.

Senior Billy Cortes fittingly kicked off the festivities, with Matt Kassel, Paul Torres, Kaoru Forbess and Helge Leikvang following suit with goals of their own. Cortes provided Maryland (14-2-1, 6-1-1 ACC) with the game-winner when he took a pass from John Stertzer, shook a defender, and fired from 25 yards past Coastal Carolina (9-7-2) goalkeeper Scott Angevine at 15:18.

Kassel followed by netting arguably the best goal of the year when his bomb near midfield rocketed over Angevine to the left corner at 18:16. Cortes was credited with the assist from the near sideline for his third point of the match.

The Terps extended their lead to three when Torres headed home his fifth goal of the year and the shortest one of the match after Leikvang's strike blasted off the crossbar in the 62nd minute. Forbess got in on the scoring nine minutes later when his long-range free kick sliced the left post for a 4-0 score.

Leikvang concluded the Terrapin distance attack with a 45-yard strike at 86:04 for his first career goal at Maryland.

Terp goalkeeper Zac MacMath tallied his third consecutive and 11th total shutout in 2010. The Terps will roll a 10-game winning streak into Cary, N.C., next week for the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Soccer Championship.

Seniors Jason Herrick, Doug Rodkey, Will Swaim, Greg Young and Cortes played their final regular season contest at Ludwig Field, a venue where the group has amassed an incredible 42-5-5 record in the last four seasons.

"It was a great night and a great celebration for our seniors," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We had some of the best goals of the year. This is a good group. They are a fun group. Defensively, we didn't give away any chances against a team that was very tall and is better than their record indicates."

Maryland, which owns the second seed in the upcoming ACC Championship, will wait for the official bracket to be released late Sunday.
