Seniors Billy Cortes and Jason Herrick have been tabbed to the initial list of invitees for the 2011 adidas Major League Soccer Combine, announced by the league office Thursday.
With the looming MLS SuperDraft just a month away, the league announced the names of 54 college seniors from 36 Division I schools, as selected by a panel of Division I coaches in conjunction with MLS coaches.
Herrick recently wrapped up a stellar career as four-year starter at forward for Maryland. He was a two-time first team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, racking up 20 goals in his last two seasons in College Park while leading the Terps to back-to-back NCAA Quarterfinal appearances. He concluded his illustrious career with 29 scores and 14 assists, including a career-high six as a senior in 2010. Herrick was also a viable source of leadership for head coach Sasho Cirovski and Maryland the last two seasons, serving as a captain in both campaigns. A great competitor and tremendous student-athlete, Herrick, a native of Elmhurst, Ill., was also named a Lowe's Senior CLASS finalist for his work in the classroom, on the field and in the community.
Cortes has been a sturdy contributor for the Terps since 2007 and helped guide Maryland to its third national title in program history in 2008. The senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., has played every position on the field besides goalkeeper for Maryland during his four-year career and was called upon to seal up both midfield and right back positions this season for the ACC Champion Terps. In his final two seasons in College Park, Cortes netted eight goals and dished seven assists.
More players, including those from the Generation adidas program, Division II and II schools, and NAIA schools, will be added in the coming weeks.
The combine is set to take place in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Jan. 7-11. MLSsoccer.com will have full coverage of the combine games and profiles of many of the players.
