WASHINGTON, D.C. - Maryland defender Ethan White has signed to play professionally with Major League Soccer's D.C. United, becoming the squad's fourth Homegrown player, the club announced Tuesday morning.
White, a sophomore, progressed from United's Academy to Maryland, where he led the Terps to back-to-back NCAA Quarterfinal appearances and a 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference title. The Kensington, Md., product helped Maryland equal its program-best mark for shutouts in a season (15) and was tabbed a second team All-ACC selection for his efforts.
"It's always been a dream for Ethan to play professionally and for D.C. United," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "We are happy for him and his family that he has been able to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional player for his hometown club. Ethan has tremendous potential and we have seen tremendous strides over his past two years and know that the best is yet to come.
"He has been a great player for us for the last two seasons and integral part of all our success. On behalf of Terrapin nation, we thank him for his contributions and wish him the very best."
White, a key component of Maryland's youth-laden back line for the past two seasons, is currently part of the United States Youth National Team player pool. He joined Terrapin teammate Zac MacMath on the U-20 squad that captured the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland last summer.
"I've loved my two years at Maryland," White said. "I feel honored to have been part of the best program in the country and want to thank all my coaches and teammates who have helped my development. I grew tremendously in the professional environment at Maryland and just felt that it was the right time for me to challenge myself and take the next step in my career."
White joins 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year Andy Najar, goalkeeper Bill Hamid and midfielder Conor Shanosky as Homegrown players on United's roster.
