Catalino Leads Six Terps On Preseason All-America List

Senior attackman Grant Catalino headlines a group of six Maryland men's lacrosse players that were named to the annual Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-America teams.

Catalino earned a first team selection, while senior defender Brett Schmidt and senior attackman Ryan Young were second and third team honorees, respectively. Sophomore midfielder John Haus, senior long pole Brian Farrell and senior defender Max Schmidt were honorable mention selections.


Catalino, a native of Webster, N.Y., earns was a second All-America honor after leading the Terps in goals (34) and points (54) in 2010. He finished his third season as a Terp with the fourth-best point total in his first three seasons since freshman records were first kept in 1970 with 143 points. That total ranks Catalino 21st on the career points list at Maryland, while his 88 career goals ties him for 15th on that all-time list. Catalino's 54 points were the most by a Terrapin player since 2006. This is the third time Catalino has been named to the preseason All-America list, earning honorable mention honors prior to the 2009 and 2010 seasons. Catalino is the first Terp to be a first team preseason All-American since 2007 when defenders Ray Megill and Steve Whittenberg were first team selections.
Brett Schmidt, a native of Dublin, Pa., was a third team USILA All-American and a LaxPower All-American after his breakthrough junior season. A shut down defender for the majority of last year, Schmidt led the Terps with 28 caused turnovers and finished tied for fifth on the team with 36 groundballs. Schmidt helped lead a Terrapin defense that finished the season ranked first in caused turnovers per game in the NCAA (11.38) and seventh in groundballs per game (36.06). He was a preseason honorable mention All-American prior to the 2010 season.
Young, a native of Manhasset, N.Y., was an honorable mention All-American last season after leading the team with 30 assists, the first time any Terp has reached that mark since 2006. Last season, Young ranked ninth in the NCAA in assists per game (1.88). He finished second on the team in points with 48 and was third on the team with 18 goals. Young also led all Terp offensive players with 37 groundballs. This is Young's third time on the preseason All-America list. He was a honorable mention selection in 2009 and was a third team pick prior to the 2010 season.
Haus, a Lutherville, Md., native, earns his first preseason All-America honor after enjoying a terrific freshman campaign in 2010. Haus finished the season with 12 goals, becoming the first freshman midfielder to score 10 or more goals for the Terps since 1997 when Brian Zeller had 12. Two of his 12 goals were game-winners for the Terps. The first came in the remarkable come-from-behind win at Georgetown, while the second was in Maryland's 13-5 victory over No. 3 North Carolina in the ACC tournament semifinals. For the season he had a shooting percentage of 38.7, which was second among all Maryland offensive regulars. He also put 74.2% of his shots on goal which led all Maryland players with 10 or more shots.
Farrell, a native of Baltimore, Md., earned second team All-America honors after being a dominant force on both ends of the field for the Terps in 2010. Defensively, he finishing the season second on the team in groundballs (53) and caused turnovers (26). On the offensive side for the field Farrell finished with 12 points, which was 10th-best on the team, on six goals and six assists, which was the fifth-most on the squad. For his career Farrell now has 35 points on 21 goals and 14 assists, 133 groundballs and 66 caused turnovers. This is the fourth time Farrell has been named to the preseason All-America squad. He was a preseason selection in 2008 and 2010 and was a second team honoree prior to the 2009 season.
Max Schmidt, a native of Upper Arlington, Ohio, was a honorable mention All-American after having a solid junior season, including a terrific second half of the year. Overall, Schmidt finished the season third on the team in groundballs (39) and caused turnovers (21). Schmidt helped lead a Terrapin defense that finished the season ranked first in caused turnovers per game in the NCAA (11.38) and seventh in groundballs per game (36.06). This is Schmidt's third time on the preseason All-America list. He was a honorable mention selection in 2009 and was a third team pick prior to the 2010 season.
