#19/22 Maryland to Host Terrapin Classic

    COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 19/22 Maryland women's basketball team will play host No. 18/17 St. John's, Liberty and La Salle in the annual Terrapin Classic Dec. 28-29 in College Park. The Terps will play La Salle Tuesday at noon.

    Tuesday's game will also be broadcast live on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and can be heard on ESPN 1300 (Baltimore).

    St. John's and Liberty will tip off at approximately 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. The two winning teams from Tuesday's games will play Wednesday, as will the two remaining teams. Maryland will play at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the second game beginning at approximately 2 p.m.

    Maryland's game on Wednesday will be shown live on TerpsTV Premium and will be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com.

    The Terrapins are coming off of a 79-49 win at Delaware State last Sunday. Freshman Alyssa Thomas led all scorers with 17 points and earned ACC Co-Rookie of the Week honors.

    Heading into Tuesday's game against the Explorers, the Terps are looking to extend their nine-game win streak. Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang comes into the game with 499 career points, while junior Lynetta Kizer has 978.

    Maryland is ranked No. 19 in the latest edition of the Associated Press poll and is No. 22 in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll.

    After the Terrapin Classic, the Terps will head to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph's January 2 at 2 p.m.

  • Maryland won at Delaware State 79-49 in Dover, Del. last Sunday.
  • Freshman Alyssa Thomas led all scorers with 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field. Junior Lynetta Kizer notched her third double-double of the year with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas was named ACC Co-Rookie of the Week, along with Virginia Tech's Monet Tellier for her performance.
  • Sophomore Tianna Hawkins scored 15 points for her third straight game in double figures. Freshman Alicia DeVaughn scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • The Terrapins outrebounded the Hornets, 44-28. Maryland won the battle inside, outscoring DSU in the paint 50-14.
  • The Terps had 14 turnovers and forced 18 out of the Hornets. Maryland scored 20 points off turnovers and Delaware State got just eight.
  • Maryland recorded a season-high nine blocks. Kizer led with four.

    SCOUTING THE EXPLORERS

  • La Salle is 4-6 so far this season. It is 1-4 on the road.
  • Ashley Gale leads the Explorers with 14.8 points per game. She shoots almost 36 percent from outside the arc and averages 5.8 boards per game.
  • La Salle averages 39.5 rebounds per game. Jess Koci leads with 8.3 per game.
  • Most recently, the Explorers lost at Seton Hall 65-62. Gale led with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Nadia Duncan and Ebonee Jones added 13 and 10, respectively.
  • The Terrapins lead the all-time series 2-0 and the two teams haven't met in nearly 30 years. Maryland won the last meeting 115-54 on Feb. 14, 1980.

    ABOUT THE TERPS

  • Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.
  • All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.
  • Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.
  • 10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

    GLASS CRASHERS

  • Maryland is one of the strongest rebounding teams in the country.
  • The Terps lead the country in rebounding margin (+18.1).
  • Three Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC in rebounding. Junior Lynetta Kizer is tied for No. 11 (7.5 rpg) in rebounding, while freshman Alicia DeVaughn is No. 13 (7.3 rpg). Freshman Alyssa Thomas is No. 18 (6.3 rpg).
  • The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in all 11 of their games. They have grabbed 521 rebounds to their opponent's 322.

    ALL HANDS ON DECK

  • Nine Terrapins are averaging over 17.0 minutes per game.
  • All 13 Terps have seen action in six of the 11 games this year.

    DOUBLE-DOUBLES

  • In the first 11 games of the season, four Terrapins have notched double-doubles.
  • Junior Lynetta Kizer leads the way with three so far. The first two were at No. 13/13 Georgetown (10 points, 16 rebounds) and against Appalachian State (12 points, 10 rebounds). Most recently, she scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds at Delaware State. She has 22 double-doubles in her career.
  • Freshman Alicia DeVaughn earned her first double-double at No. 13/13 Georgetown with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang earned the first of her career during the East Carolina Thanksgiving Tournament. She scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds against East Carolina.
  • Sophomore Tianna Hawkins notched her first of the year and eighth in her career at Loyola. She had 17 points and 12 rebounds and also grabbed her 300th rebound in that game.

    200 FOR FRESE

  • Frese earned her 200th win at Maryland Nov. 21 vs. American. She reached that mark faster that any coach in Maryland women's basketball history.
  • Just entering her ninth season in College Park, Frese's record is 206-74. (.736).

    TERPS IN THE POLLS

  • Maryland is ranked No. 19 in the latest Associated Press poll and comes in at No. 22 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll.
  • The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.
  • The week of Dec. 13 marked the 100th week head coach Brenda Frese had a team ranked in her career at Maryland. She now has had a team ranked 101 weeks while in College Park.

    TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

  • Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.
  • The Terps have won 83.50 percent of their games in Comcast Center (116-23) since it opened in 2002.
  • Maryland has led the ACC in attendance since 2007.
