#18/20 Maryland Heads to St. Joseph's

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 18/20 Maryland women's basketball team will head to Philadelphia this weekend to take on St. Joseph's. The Terrapins and the Hawks will tip off at 2 p.m. Sunday in Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena.

The Terrapins are coming off of a 66-60 win over No. 17/17 St. John's Wednesday in the Terrapin Classic championship game. With the win, the Terps extended their win streak to 11 straight games.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang was named the Terrapin Classic MVP, as she scored 19 points in the game against St. John's, including 15 in the first half. Junior Lynetta Kizer was named to the Terrapin Classic All-Tournament team. She became the 26th player in Maryland women's basketball history to break the 1,000-point mark with her 13 points in Wednesday's game.

Maryland's game on Sunday will be broadcast live on WMUCSports.com and live stats will be available.

St. Joseph's will be hosting the Hawks for Hope event at Sunday's game. The event will benefit the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in honor of a young girl, Gracie, who is originally from Maryland who received treatment in Philadelphia. Maryland is ranked No. 18 in the latest edition of the Associated Press poll and is No. 20 in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll.

After Sunday's game, the Terrapins will open Atlantic Coast Conference play Thursday at No. 3/3 Duke at 7 p.m. Thursday.

LAST TIME OUT

Maryland topped No. 17/17 St. John's 66-60 Wednesday in the championship game of the Terrapin Classic.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang led all scorers with 19 points, including 15 in the first half. She was 8-for-12 from the line with two three's. Lynetta Kizer scored 13 points.

Freshmen Alyssa Thomas and Alicia DeVaughn led the Terrapins with seven rebounds each.

The Terrapins were outrebounded for the first time this year. St. John's grabbed 37 rebounds to the Terps' 35.

The Terps had 17 turnovers and forced 19 out of the Red Storm. Maryland beat St. John's in the paint, 32-18.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS

St. Joseph's is 10-3 so far this season and 5-0 at home. The Hawks have won their last seven straight games.

Michelle Baker leads St. Joseph's in scoring with 15.2 points per game.

St. Joseph's averages 35.5 rebounds per game. Kelly Cavallo leads the Hawks with 7.2 boards per contest.

Most recently, the Hawks beat Lafayette75-40 to win their own Hawk Classic.

ABOUT THE TERPS

Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.

All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas, won their respective titles.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.

10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

GLASS CRASHERS

Maryland is one of the strongest rebounding teams in the country.

The Terps lead the ACC in rebounding margin (+16.3).

Three Terps are in the top 20 in the ACC in rebounding. Junior Lynetta Kizer is No. 12 (7.4 rpg) in rebounding, while freshman Alicia DeVaughn is No. 13 (6.8 rpg). Freshman Alyssa Thomas is tied for No. 19 (6.3 rpg).

The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in 12 of 13 games. They have grabbed 607 rebounds to their opponent's 395.

ALL HANDS ON DECK

Eight Terrapins are averaging over 17.0 minutes per game.

All 13 Terps have seen action in seven of the 13 games this year.

Nine players for Maryland have played in every game.

The Terrapins have had five different starting lineups through the first 13 games of the season.

Maryland's bench averages 25.2 points per game. The Terrapins' bench has outscored its opponent's bench in nine of the 13 games this season (328-212).

DOUBLE-DOUBLES

In the first 13 games of the season, four Terrapins have notched double-doubles.

Junior Lynetta Kizer leads the way with three so far. The first two were at No. 13/13 Georgetown (10 points, 16 rebounds) and against Appalachian State (12 points, 10 rebounds). Most recently, she scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds at Delaware State. She has 22 double-doubles in her career.

Freshman Alicia DeVaughn earned her first double-double at No. 13/13 Georgetown with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang earned the first of her career during the East Carolina Thanksgiving Tournament. She scored 13 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds against East Carolina.

Sophomore Tianna Hawkins notched her first of the year and eighth in her career at Loyola. She had 17 points and 12 rebounds and also grabbed her 300th rebound in that game.

200 FOR FRESE

Frese earned her 200th win at Maryland Nov. 21 vs. American. She reached that mark faster that any coach in Maryland women's basketball history.

Just entering her ninth season in College Park, Frese's record is 209-74. (.739).

TERPS IN THE POLLS

Maryland is ranked No. 18 in the latest Associated Press poll and comes in at No. 20 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll.

The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.

The week of Dec. 13 marked the 100th week head coach Brenda Frese had a team ranked in her career at Maryland. She now has had a team ranked 102 weeks while in College Park.

TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.

The Terps have won 83.70 percent of their games in Comcast Center (118-23) since it opened in 2002.

Maryland has led the ACC in attendance since 2007.
