#22/23 Maryland to Host UMBC Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 22/23 Maryland women's basketball team will play host to University of Maryland-Baltimore County Friday at Comcast Center. The Terps (8-1) and Retrievers (4-5) are set to tip off at 7 p.m.

The game will also be broadcast live on the Terrapin Sports Radio Network and can be heard on ESPN 1300 (Baltimore) and ESPN 980 (Washington).

The Terps own the all-time series over UMBC 8-0. Most recently, the Terps beat the Retrievers 98-56 on Dec. 30, 2008.

The Terrapins are coming off of a 79-61 win at Loyola Tuesday in Baltimore. Junior Lynetta Kizer scored a season-high 21 points and sophomore Tianna Hawkins notched her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds. She also grabbed her 300th career rebound Tuesday night.

Junior Anjale Barrett and sophomore Dara Taylor each dished their 200th career assist in Tuesday's game.

The Terrapins remained at No. 22 in the Associated Press poll this week. They come in at No. 23 in the ESPN USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll for the first time this season.

After Friday's game, Maryland will head to Dover, Del. to play Delaware State Sunday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m.

The Terps have outrebounded their opponents in every game this year. They have grabbed 444 boards to their opponents' 274. Maryland is No. 2 in the country in rebounding margin (+18.9). It is second only to Syracuse (+21.3).

Heading into Friday's game, Lynetta Kizer needs one rebound for her 600th board and Tianna Hawkins needs three points to break 400.

LAST TIME OUT...

Maryland won 79-61 at Loyola in Baltimore Tuesday night.

Junior Lynetta Kizer led the Terrapins with a season-high 21 points off of 9-for-10 shooting from the field. She hit her first trey of the season as well and grabbed eight rebounds.

Sophomore Tianna Hawkins notched her first double-double of the year with 17 points and 12 rebounds. She was 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from the line.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang and freshman Alicia DeVaughn each scored nine points. Tchatchouang also grabbed nine boards for the Terps.

The Terrapins outrebounded the Greyhounds 51-26.

Maryland won the battle inside, outscoring Appalachian State in the paint 48-16. The Terps also got 34 points from their players coming in off the bench, while the Greyhounds got just eight.

Freshman Alyssa Thomas did not play, due to a knee laceration she suffered in Sunday's game.

SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS

UMBC is 4-5 overall this season. The Retrievers have yet to win a road contest, but have won their last three straight (Brown, Bucknell, Towson).

The Retrievers are led in scoring by Michelle Kurowski, who is averaging 14.8 points per game. Erin Brown is averaging 12.7, while Tope Obajolu is scoring 11.0

UMBC averages 33.0 rebounds per game. Meghan Colabella leads with 5.9 per game, while Brown and Kurowki follow with 5.7 and 5.1, respectively.

The Terrapins lead the all-time series 8-0. Most recently, they beat the Retrievers 98-56 on Dec. 30, 2008 in College Park.

ABOUT THE TERPS

Maryland fields one of the youngest rosters in the nation. The Terps are one of seven teams in the country to not have any seniors.

All five members of Maryland's No. 2 recruiting class played in their state's high school championship game and three, Alicia DeVaughn, Laurin Mincy and Alyssa Thomas won their respective titles.

Sophomore Diandra Tchatchouang played in the European championships over the summer. She led France to a fourth-place finish in the tournament. She was on her way to being tournament MVP, before suffering an ankle injury.

10 of the 14 Terrapins are over 6'0 tall and eight are over 6'2, making the Terps one of the tallest teams in the country. None of the Terps' 2010-11 opponents have as many players over 6'1.

GLASS CRASHERS

Maryland is one of the strongest rebounding teams in the league.

The Terrapins average 49.3 rebounds a game, which is second in the ACC.

They lead the league in rebounding margin (+18.9). They are No. 2 in the country in rebounding margin, second only to Syracuse (+21.3).

Junior Lynetta Kizer is No. 11 in the ACC with 7.9 boards per contest. Freshman Alicia DeVaughn is No. 12 with an average of 7.8 per game.

The Terrapins have won the battle on the boards in all eight of their games. They have grabbed 444 rebounds to their opponent's 274.

Nine Terrapins are averaging over 17.0 minutes per game.

All 13 Terps have seen action in five of the nine games this year.

200 FOR FRESE

Brenda Frese earned her 200th win at Maryland Nov. 21 vs. American.

Just entering her ninth season in College Park, Frese's record is 205-74. (.735).

She broke the 200-mark faster than any coach in Maryland women's basketball history.

TERPS IN THE POLLS

Maryland is ranked No. 22 in the latest Associated Press poll and comes in at No. 23 in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches poll for the first time this season.

The Terps began the season ranked 21st in the Associated Press poll. They have started the season ranked in each of the last seven seasons.

Maryland was also ranked No. 10 in the preseason Athlon Sports poll.

TOUGH PLACE TO PLAY

Comcast Center was recently named one of the country's top ten toughest places to play. No other ACC school made the top ten.

The Terps have won 83.30 percent of their games in Comcast Center (115-23) since it opened in 2002.

Maryland has led the ACC in attendance since 2007.
