COLLEGE PARK, Md. - University of Maryland senior guard Lori Bjork of Johnston, Iowa, was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team as voted by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She also won the prestigious award in 2007 being named to the third team.
Bjork joins the ranks of former Maryland players Crystal Langhorne and Shay Doron. Langhorne was awarded All-America second team status in 2008 while Doron earned it in 2006 and 2007.
Bjork leads the Terrapins in three-pointers with 68 this season and has led in points on eight occasions. She is second in the Atlantic Coast Conference in three's made and third in three-point field goal percentage (.417). Bjork has climbed up the Maryland senior record books with her talent from behind the arc; currently sitting at No. 3 in three's made (68) and in three-point attempts (163). Bjork has registered multiple treys in a game 18 times including a career high-tying six in Maryland's upset of Virginia earlier this year.
Her work ethic on the court is resonated off the court as well in her 3.9 grade point average as she works toward her Master's degree in kinesiology. Bjork also maintained a 3.93 GPA while getting her bachelor's degree in political science at the University of Illinois. She left the Illini as a 1,000 point scorer and the school's record holder for most three's in a career. Bjork also owns Illinois' best career three-point shooting percentage.
Bjork is a three-time Academic All-District first team selection. Thus far, she has amassed 1,402 points; over half of those coming from her 282 made three-pointers.
In order to be eligible for nomination, student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games and have at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA.
Joining Bjork on the Academic All-America second team is Lauren Sims (Long Beach State), Amanda Johnson (Oregon), Brandi Brown (Middle Tennessee State) and May Kotsopoulos (Vermont).
