The University of Maryland placed four student-athletes on the 2009 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Soccer Team, announced Wednesday by the league office.
Senior Kevin Tangney, junior Jason Herrick, sophomore Casey Townsend and freshman Taylor Kemp all landed on this year's list.
Tangney, who was drafted by Chivas USA in January, was the heart and soul of Maryland's defense in 2009. The Newtown, Pa., native was named NSCAA First Team All-Atlantic South Region and Second Team All-ACC. The fifth-year senior and general business major also helped Maryland offensively, scoring three goals and adding an assist in his final season in College Park.
Herrick was one of four First Team All-ACC selections to also be named to the academic team. The junior from Elmhurst, Ill., was the Terps' top scoring threat in 2009, notching a team-high nine goals. In addition to his conference honor, the accounting major was also named First Team All-South Atlantic Region.
Townsend battled injury for the majority of the season but played a key role in Maryland's tournament success at the end of the season. The Traverse City, Mich., product scored six goals in an abbreviated 2009 campaign and helped Maryland advance to its eighth-straight NCAA Sweet Sixteen.
Kemp had a tremendous rookie season, starting in the Maryland backline every match except one in 2009. The freshman, who majors in kinesiology, tallied two assists and was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team.
To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.0 cumulative average during his academic career. Zack Schilawski, a senior biology major from Wake Forest, repeated as ACC Men's Soccer Scholar Athlete of the Year.
