COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team will close out the regular season at home on Sunday. Maryland has won 13 homes games this season, including their most recent home win, a 20-point victory over Clemson. The last time a top-10 program stepped foot in College Park was in January when No. 6 Duke barely escaped the Terrapins by one point. Maryland played the Blue Devils shot-for-shot, holding them to their second-lowest shooting performance from the field this season (.328).
Leading the Terps is sophomore Lynetta Kizer who has averaged double-figure points all season and boasts 12.4 points per game. Kizer also pulls down a team-high 7.8 boards per game. Two other Terrapins average double-digit points, Bjork and freshman Diandra Tchatchouang. Bjork sits at 11.0 while Tchatchouang is second on the team and leads all Atlantic Coast Conference freshmen with 11.9 points per contest. The La Courneuve, France, native is the only Maryland player who has started every single game this season. She also leads the team in blocks with 39. Freshman Tianna Hawkins leads all ACC freshmen and is second on the team in rebounding with 7.4 per game. Dara Taylor, also a freshman, leads her class in assists with 146 and is third in the league overall.
The Terrapins have out-rebounded their opponent in all but three games this season and tied once. Maryland ranks No. 2 in the ACC in rebounding margin (+9.8). At least two or more Terps have notched double-figure points in all but two games this season. Bjork and Tchatchouang lead with 18 and Kizer has 17 double-digit point performances.
Florida State has won their last seven games and has only recorded two losses in the ACC, one to Duke and the other to Miami, both on the road. The only other losses the Seminoles have suffered were to No. 1 Connecticut and DePaul.
Three players average double-figures for Florida State, led by Jacinta Moore with 13.4 points per game. Moore also leads in rebounds, pulling down 7.7 boards per contest. Courtney Ward and Alysha Harvin also average double-figure points at 10.9 and 10.6, respectively. The Seminoles had three first place votes in the Preseason ACC polls and were selected to finish third.
The Senior Day ceremony will recognize two seniors who were only able to contribute one year on the floor, but whose impacts are immeasurable. Wallace was sidelined after playing one season but head coach Brenda Frese saw the effect Wallace had on the team from the sideline and knew she remained a key player for the Terps. The Roanoke, Va., native continued to travel with the team and provide encouragement and inspiration to all of her teammates. Bjork, a transfer from the University of Illinois, has given the 2009-10 Terrapins the senior position they were missing. Her constant efforts on and off the floor have rewarded her and the team immensely. Bjork is No. 2 in the Maryland senior record books in three-pointers made with 70 which also puts her at fourth in the single season records for treys. She also became a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second team selection.
Maryland leads the all-time series against Florida State, 23-12. The Terps have taken wins in the last four games and are 13-3 at home. The Seminoles are currently 4-2 in conference road games and is second overall in the league.
