COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's basketball team returns to conference play Friday, Feb. 5 against No. 21 Georgia Tech in Comcast Center. The game will be broadcasted on Comcast SportsNet, Fox Sports South and Fox Sports Florida. Tip is slated for 8:36 p.m. ET.
Maryland dominates the overall series with Georgia Tech, holding a 42-16 advantage, including a 24-3 record at home. The Terps have won the last three contests. GT last defeated the Terrapins 77-72 on Feb. 1, 2007 in Atlanta, Ga.
Head coach Brenda Frese is one win away from her 250th career victory and eight wins away from her 200th as a Maryland Terrapin.
The Terps' last ACC win was against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., where the Terrapins walked away with a 60-44 victory. Sophomore Lynetta Kizer earned her sixth career double-double in the win after posting 18 points and pulling down a career-best 16 rebounds. Senior Lori Bjork registered her second 20-point performance of the year with 22 points on 8-for-11 shooting.
Maryland also took a convincing 45-point win over Longwood Sunday. Sophomore Kim Rodgers led the team in points with 15 after hitting 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, a career-high. The Terrapins recorded a season-high 10 three's with contributions from Rodgers, Bjork and freshmen Dara Taylor, Diandra Tchatchouang and Jackie Nared. Nared also notched her first career double-double with 11 points and rebounds.
Georgia Tech is coming off a two-win week after finding triumph over Miami and Virginia Tech, both at home. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Canes in overtime, 80-73, while earning a 14-point win over the Hokies, 81-47 in regulation. GT has dropped only five games this year, all losses on the road, the last three coming at the hands of conference opponents (UNC, Boston College, Virginia).
The Jackets have quite the experienced team with nine returning letterwinners and three starters from last year's team. Three upperclassmen lead the squad statistically, senior Brigitte Ardossi and juniors Alex Montgomery and Deja Foster. Ardossi leads GT in scoring and rebounding averaging 14.9 points and 7.3 boards a game. Montgomery and Foster are the second and third leading scorers averaging 11.9 and 9.9 points, respectively. Foster also leads in assists (87) and steals (51).
Mike Hogewood and Debbie Antonelli will have the call during Maryland's fourth televised game of the year. Fans can also listen live at WMUCSports.com.
